A visit to the Glendalough monastic site has to be one of the best day trips from Dublin. Glendalough features majestic countryside in a valley of two lakes carved out by the retreating glaciers at the end of the last ice age.

    dublin to glendalough

Just one hour away by car, you can see one of the best preserved monastic sites in Ireland, founded by Saint Kevin in the 6th Century, almost 1500 years ago. It features churches, some of which are over one thousand years old, an intact celtic belltower and cemetery which was in use until quite recently.

Wood from the hinterland was used to construct one the largest Viking boats every discovered and the patron Saint of Dublin used the valley as a retreat from hustle and bustle of Dublin, as can you.
